The first Breitling Navitimers replica watch became available in 1954, and they were all equipped with the Valjoux 72 movement. The first generation of Navitimers was soon declared the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA) official watch, and each of these early models featured AOPA's insignia on the dial. Later on, in 1960's, the Navitimer was redesigned and the Breitling name and logo appeared on the dial instead of the AOPA sign. The sub-counters were now white, instead of black, and the hands were reshaped to fit the new design.

The most exciting moment in Navitimer history happened in 1961, when the astronaut Scott Carpenter, of the Mercury space program, suggested to Breitling that they should incorporate 24 hour dial instead of the normal 12 hour dial. This innovation was conceived to help the astronauts during spaceflight, when it's hard to keep track of day and night. Breitling compiled and the new Navitamer Cosmonaute was born – the very same watch that Scott Carpenter wore on NASA's Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. We recently marked the 50th Anniversary of this model.
